1. In Plato’s Republic, Socrates argues that the tyrant is characterized above all by his eros, that is, by the desire to have more and more honors, wealth, and power. Yet, the tyrannical man who most appears to enjoy freedom and power over others is actually a slave! What arguments does Socrates use to advance this view against the tyrannical man? Are his arguments persuasive? Why, or why not? (Pay particular attention to Books 8-9).

Note that a well-ordered, well-organized, and well-argued essay is better than an essay that just provides an accumulation of general information about the text.
Guidelines for Essays:
· Place a word count at the top of the paper just under your name. Penalties will be attached to papers that run over/below the prescribed word limit (up to 200 words in either above or below the required word count is fine).
· The in-text citations should include the Stephanus numbers, which can be found in the margins (e.g., 359b-d). You should also include a bibliography, preferably Chicago style bibliography (https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html).
· No use of outside sources! The papers will be assessed on how well you make your own case using the course text. The graders are looking for three things: that you’ve actually read Plato’s Republic, that you have some understanding of these text, and that you are capable of producing a plausible argument about this text. Your essay will need to demonstrate those three things.
· For your sake and ours, please plan to submit your work on time, that is, June 24, 2022, at 5 p.m. If you find yourself needing an extension, please reach out to your TA. We ask that you include (a) the reason for your request, and (b) a proposal for a new deadline. If you have additional documentation (like a doctor’s note), please include that, too.
· You should familiarize yourself with the university’s policy on plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense and will be dealt with accordingly. For further clarification and information, please see the University of Toronto’s policy on plagiarism at http://www.utoronto.ca/writing/plagsep.html. You must write your papers specifically for this class; you should not borrow material from another class; and you should not use another person’s words or ideas without attribution, whether those words or ideas come from conversations, the internet, or printed materials.
