Listen to the excerpts below. The vast majority of these excerpts are under 5 minutes. There are only a few complete works in this collection. For each excerpt, answer the following questions:
I followed all the listening guidelines listed above. Yes or No (type whichever applies)
In what year was this piece written or first performed?______________

From a musical standpoint, what is interesting and engaging about this music? (To answer this question, apply what you’ve learned or researched in this class or on your own). Below, I’ve given an example of how I might describe a portion of Excerpt #1. You’ll do this one as well! I don’t expect your comments to be as specific and detailed as mine. However, do your best to describe what you’re hearing. I’d suggest you listen to each excerpt multiple times. During the first listening, it’s okay to get emotionally involved, that’s what makes the music so enjoyable and meaningful! On your second and third listening, do your best to discover what is happening from a musical standpoint. During these listenings, you may not want to let your emotions get too much involved. Do your best to describe what you’re hearing, not necessarily how it makes you feel. Below is a few things I’d write about Excerpt #1. Remember, it’s not so much about what you say, it’s about how you listen. I rarely deducted ANY points for those that really listen and take on this challenge! EXAMPLE:
Excerpt #1:
Questions:
1=Yes 2=This Nocturne was composed in 1830 for Chopin’s older sister, Ludwika, and was first published 26 years after the composer’s death. 3=This piece had a short introduction which established the mood in a minor key. This intro ended at 22 seconds on this recording. The main theme remained in a minor key and started at 26 seconds in the right hand. The contour of the melody was mostly in descending motion with a with trill and a musical turn added as ornaments to the theme. The tempo remained slow throughout with the left hand accompanying with gentle rocking arpeggios. The first theme repeated at 56 seconds with added decoration and descending material. At 1:26, a new contrasting theme in a major key was introduced, etc.
