Discuss the potential social implications of this misinformation spreading.
This week we have discussed mis- and disinformation. For this week’s discussion you’ll do the following:
1. Find a piece of misinformation or disinformation that was spread on social media (you can try checking out the fact-checks on snopes.com for ideas). 2. Explain to your group members the context for the misinformation as well as what the misinformation was (e.g., provide a summary of the misinformation). 3. Discuss what aspects of the misinformation made it believable (did it provide a simple explanation for a complex phenomena? Did it heighten one’s emotions?). 4. Discuss the potential social implications of this misinformation spreading.
5. Provide the link to an article that is either the original source of misinformation or describes what happened.
