RE: Discussion – Week 5
COLLAPSE
Each state has its regulatory body of nursing, also called the nursing board, that develops
the rules and regulations. The mission of the nursing board is to promote and protect the public
health, public welfare, and safety of the people by involving the nursing practices. It is important
to understand and implement the developed rules and regulations for being a professional person
in the nursing department. “APRN practice is typically defined by the Nurse Practice Act and
governed by the Board of Nursing, but other laws and regulations may impact practice, and other
boards may play a role” (Nursingworld, 2010).

The two selected states to discuss are Maryland
and Michigan for nursing regulations. The first regulation is the working of midwives in the
nursing department, which is different in both states. The regulation in the Maryland state offers
physician free training to the midwives while the Michigan state offers the training under the
supervision of the physician while providing the health care.
The second regulation is the governance of nurse practitioners in the states, as each state
has a different governance department. The Maryland state allowed the Nurse Practice Act to
govern the nurse practitioners, while the Michigan state allowed the public health department to
govern the nurse practitioners. Nurses in the Michigan state can prescribe medicine, while nurses
in the Maryland state does not allow to prescribe the medicine. They need to register with the
concerning authority for prescribing the medicine. “Nationwide, APRNs will need to
demonstrate support from physician colleagues when advocating for reform. Increased
engagement of nurses in professional advocacy is needed” (Bachtel et al., 2020). The selected
regulation will work as a guideline for the APRNs that have full-time education and experience.
Fulfilling the training requirement and offering proper safety to all patients can be improved
under these regulations.
