Topic: What’s the difference between Frege and Dummett’s Frege?Essay 2. (deadline: March 1)
What’s the difference between Frege and Dummett’s Frege?
1. In general, focus on the first five sets of powerpoint slides. Where does Dummett diverge from Frege (i.e., how does ‘Dummett’s Frege’ differ from Frege)? How does Frege account for the objectivity of thought? Why does Dummett find this problematic, and what did Dummett offer as an alternative account of where the objectivity arises from? Look for how this is answered in both the powerpoint slides and the readings.
2. There are many ways that Dummett diverges from Frege himself, and feel free to draw these out in the 400 words, but make sure you are covering the differences described in the powerpoint slides. Be sure to cite where in the text Dummett or Frege is ascribing to these views.
3. My preferred citation style would be Chicago; but if you are not familiar with it, please feel free to use whichever. Just be sure to reference the right page numbers for your citations.
4. As a general tip: be concise and don’t repeat yourself. However, you need to be sure that you are clearly defining and technical terms you are introducing that (say) a first year philosophy student might not know. Draw some clear, concise contrasts between Frege and Dummett’s Frege–don’t repeat the same difference over and over.
