Essays should be doubled-spaced, size 12 font, Calibri, Ariel, or Times New Roman
font, with one-inch margins all around.
● Essays must be 750-1000 words.
● All references from the textbook or documents must be cited Chicago footnotes.
● The required heading is only your name and a page number in the top right hand
corner of each page.
Writing Tips:
● The “Why” is the most important question you can answer
● Do not write in 1st or 2nd person
● Cite all learned information, not just quoted information
o If it is not your independent thought, you need a citation for it
● Only use 1 quote per page
o I care more about what you have to say and not what somebody else says
● Only use a quote if:
o It cannot be equally or better said in your own words
o It is absolutely necessary for the point your essay is trying to establish
o If it does not fit BOTH rules above, it should not be quoted
● Do not ramble, just because you wrote a lot does not mean you said a lot.
o Figure out your point, make it, then move to your next topic
o Make sure all of your content goes to proving your point or answering your
question you have posed.
● Ensure you use quality primary sources
o A lack of primary sources draws into question the integrity of your historical
analysis
