examine a situation, determine your position, and make an argument.
Short Response Short response papers serve a specific purpose.
They ask you to examine a situation, determine your position, and make an argument.
The idea is to state your position in a very concise manner by focusing on your most important point and create a brief but compelling argument that has no room to ramble.
I am most interested in seeing original thought or opinion delivered in a logical manner.
Think of the papers as mini-arguments.
Though short, the papers should not be rushed.
Papers will be short (300-500 words) – the minimum and maximum are requirements, not suggestions.
Must be organized and proofread
Must be in MLA format
Late submission penalties apply.

Short Response #1:
Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was an American astronomer and astrophysicist.
As NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft was about to leave our Solar System in 1989, Sagan, who was a member of the mission’s imaging team, pleaded with officials to turn the camera around to take one last look back at Earth before the spaceship left our solar system. The resulting image, with the Earth as a speck less than 0.12 pixels in size, became known as “the pale blue dot.”
Sagan delivered the “Pale Blue Dot” speech at Cornell University, October 13, 1994. That speech was turned into a video for the show Cosmos. In the speech Sagan stated, “Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.”
For this assignment, watch the video and following the instructions above answer the following prompt:
Prompt: Today our world seems to be sharply divided along political, social, and religious lines. Will human nature ever allow us to overcome our differences to realize that we are but a “mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam”? Your response should reference or quote something specific that Sagan states in the video.
