My nursing practice issue is patients with substance use disorders who have co-occurring disorders are not treated for the underlying conditions (mental health) causing them to suffer from severe symptoms, complicate treatment, and have poor outcomes.
P: Individuals with co-occurring disorders (e.g., substance use disorder and a mental health disorder) who have not received treatment for their mental health disorder
I: Treatment or interventions aimed specifically at addressing the mental health disorder (e.g., medication, therapy, support groups)
C: no treatment at all for mental health
O: Improved outcomes related to the mental health disorder (e.g., reduction in symptoms, improved functioning, improved quality of life) and potentially also related to the substance use disorder (e.g., reduced substance use).
Research question based on PICO
Do individuals with co-occurring disorders (such as substance abuse and mental health disorders) who have not previously received treatment for their mental health disorder benefit from integrated mental health and substance use disorders as compared to those who don’t receive mental health treatment?
