Based on your readings use these two cases to explore how police-community relations might influence responses to a crisis or critical event.
The death of Freddie Gray while in police custody in Baltimore, Maryland.
Shooting of police and citizens in Dallas, Texas, at the site of the Black Lives Matter peace march (July, 2016).
Conduct an analysis of each incident. Your analysis should include research which identifies the historical and present relationship between the community and the police. Analyze the response of the community, elected officials, the media, and the police to the incident. Include what impact the relationship between the community, elected officials, the media, and the police department may have had on the type of response from each group.
For your paper,
Compare and contrast how the pre-existing relationship between the community and police influenced crisis management and what—if any—role community policing had on each of the two cases. How were they similar? How did they differ?
Examine the community policing philosophies, if any that were being practiced in each community at the time of these events?
Summarize what community policing impacts have been observed and/or might be anticipated in other communities as a result of these events.
