The course theme is “A History of Past and Present.” Each unit of the course focused on one era of American history involved with topics by (and about) black Americans. However, as many of the discussions about the corresponding literature shows, history both repeats and influences later events. For this project, work with two authors or texts from the readings and analyze how the later author “talks back” to the earlier author. Class discussions can be used as a starting point for the “talking book” that you’d like to investigate, but the paper needs to go much deeper than any discussion. Students can complete this as a 5-6 minute recorded presentation (with accompanying visual such as Powerpoint) or a 1,200 word (minimum) essay. Either mode should include a Works Cited of at least 5 outside sources. Successful projects will include in text citations of evidence from all the materials and include scholarly research. Cited. This paper is a combination “Literary Analysis” and “Compare/Contrast.”
