The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition at the University of Minnesota has done a great deal of research regarding the need for ESL teachers to understand the sociolinguistic use of the language they are teaching. This is contributed to the fact that native speakers have a set of routinized patterns or strategies they can use depending on the familiarity or depth they would like to use concerning several speech acts. A list of the speech acts are as follows: Complaints, Apologies, Compliments, Greetings, Invitations, Refusals, Requests, and Thanks.
This paper will focus on four of the speech acts as well as the importance of teaching “Small talk” to L2 learners. I will look at Complaints, Apologies, Greetings, and Requests with lesson plans to follow including one on “Small Talk”. We will see how this might help Hmong Americans in their everyday life interacting with Americans at schools, their workplace or in the community.
I will add the Hmong history and cultural introduction to this L2 English speaking community as well as all the lesson plans.
