What would the benefits of helping one side over the other be?

It is July 4th, 1776! For the past ten years you have watched the relationship between England and the American colonies deteriorate; and now the leadership of the colonies have declared independence from England.
In a short paper, 500 or more words, imagine you are an American colonist from Massachusetts writing to a friend who lives in France and has no knowledge of what is happing where you are. Explain to your friend which side of the conflict you will support; America or England. (For the purposes of this paper you may use personal pronouns and speak as though you are there at the time of the events you are discussing.) Your answer should include relevant historic examples of why this would be the best decision for you to make.
You should support your central idea/argument by considering the following: How have both sides treated each other? What would the benefits of helping one side over the other be? What might the consequences be of helping one side over the other?

Papers should be at least 500 words long, double spaced, include at least three explained historic examples to support your decision, contain in-text citations and a works cited page in either MLA or Chicago Style with a title.
